Fuel system cleaning

There is more and more talk about fuel system cleaning services these days. When brought up most customers don’t understand what it is let alone why they would need to do it. For 3 to 4 years now fuel systems have been moving from a system that injects the fuel into the intake manifold which is outside the engine to “direct injection” which shoots the fuel directly into the combustion chamber.

In the first system the fuel worked as a cleaner to keep the valve clean. Now not having the fuel to do this along with the extended oil change intervals, valves are building up with carbon bad and causing drivability problem.

Why do oil changes have anything to do with this? The PCV system is designed to draw off harmful contaminates from the engines crank case into the intake manifold. Along with this normal operation as the oil get older and additives break down, the oil becomes diluted from fuel and condensation from cold temperature operation, which causes oil vapor to be more readily drawn off. This vapor then cools and deposits on the back of the intake valves. The deposits in turn greatly restrict the air trying to enter the engine affecting mileage and performance.

The pictures are from an engine we had apart this past week before and after cleaning. If your car has over 60,000 miles on it and is direct injected, have the fuel system cleaned. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Give us a call 763-420-3060.
